वदव्यासंस्वात्मरूपंसत्यसन्धं परायणम ।

స్మర్తృగామీ

జన్మ సంసారబంధఘ్నం స్వరూపానందదాయకం
నిశ్శ్రేయసవదం వందే స్మర్తృగామీ సనోఽవతు||

HE, destroyer of bondage from repeated birth cycle, bestower of bliss by realization of own nature

the path to ultimate prosperity, I bow down; to the one who can be reached by treading the path of memory; may protect us.

smRti is memory, smara is to remember, smartR+gAmI one who can be found by inward journey into the basis of one's own mind. The consciousness is the guru inward. Guru exists in everyone universally.

Today is the auspicious day of appearance of Guru in the form of Lord DattatrEya as given to the sage couple atri and anasUya. atri is the one beyond the three i.e, triads. anasUya is beyond jealousy i.e, emotional negativity. Having unified all triads, rising beyond all negative thoughts, the guru tattva appears as the smartRgAmI on this auspicious day!

May the grace of guru be on one and all! One and all find the inward guru by treading the path inwards!!

అచిత్తిమిరం - గురు వచనం

दमुना यमुनाजनकश्च विधु-
र्मिलिताः शतशोऽपि न शक्नुवते ।
यदपाकरणे तदचित्तिमिरं
त्वमपाकुरुषे वचसैव गुरो ॥

దమునా యమునాజనకశ్చ విధు-
ర్మిలితాః శతశో'పి న శక్నువతే
యదపాకరణే తదచిత్తిమిరం
త్వమపాకురుషే వచసైవ గురో

The darkness of ignorance which can't be removed even by combining the light of hundreds of fires, suns and moons together, is dispelled by thy teaching. Oh Guru!

पदनम्र जनौघ पुमर्थकरी
प्रबलाघ समुद्र निमग्न तरी ।
मयि देशिक ते श्रुतिमूर्धचरी
प्रसरेन्नु कदा सुकटाक्ष झरी ॥

Oh guru, The flow of thy kaTAksha i.e., compassionate glance, that flows from the forehead of vedas i.e., upanishads, is capable of fulfilling the lives of all those who bow down at your lotus feet; it is capable of making them cross over the difficult ocean of samsara they are stuck in. Let it fall on me as well!

జన్మసాఫల్యమ్ - Fruitful life

आस्ते देशिक चरणं निरवधिरास्ते तदीक्षणे करुणा ।
आस्ते किमपि तदुक्तं किमतः परमस्ति जन्मसाफल्यम् ॥

ఆస్తే దేశిక చరణం నిరవధిరాస్తే తదీక్షణే కరుణా
ఆస్తే కిమపి తదుక్తం కిమతః పరమస్తి జన్మసాఫల్యమ్

AstE dESika caraNam; niravadhirAstE tadIkshaNE karuNA,
AstE kimapi taduktam; kimataH paramasti janmasAphalyam?

His Holiness Swami Virajeshwara Saraswati

When there is lotus feet of guru, when there is boundless compassion in his glance and when there is his teaching (whatsoever if there is, other than the graceful silence!); What else greater need for fulfilment of life? 

Samkara bhagavatpAdAcArya stated this in his work svAtma nirUpaNam. Remembering my Guru who made my life fulfilled by his divine grace on the eve of 65th vardhanti of ananta SrI vibhUshita bhAratI tIrtha mahAswami, current SankarAcArya of SringEri SAradA pITham.

Let one and all make their lives fruitful i.e, achieve 'janma sAphalyam' by the teachings of unbroken lineage of gurus!

జగద్గురువంటే?

What is meant by "Jagadguru?" 

It is a word that denotes the "responsibility" of guiding anyone who sincerely seeks guidance in the path of spirituality.

There are two most prominent personalities who are called as Jagadguru. 

1. Lord kRshNa and 2. Adi SaMkara bhagavatpaada AcArya.

Om nArAyaNam padmabhavam vasishTham

govinda yOgIndra madhasya Sishyam
SrI SankarAchArya madhasya Sishyam
padma pAdam cha HastAmalakam cha
tam toTakam vArtika kAra manyAn
asmad gurUn santatam mAnatOsmi

-- Guru poornima

Krishna Panchakam:
Sri Krishna and four others, namely Sanatkumara, Sanaka, Sanandana and Sanatsujata consist of Krishna Panchaka. Sri Krishna is placed in the centre and others to the east, south, west and north of Lord Sri Krishna.

Vyasa Panchakam:
Veda Vyasa Bhagavan is placed in the centre. His four disciples namely Sumanthu, Jaimini, Vaisampayana and Paila are placed in the four quarters to the east, south, west and north of Vyasa respectively.

Sankaracharya Panchakam:
Sri Sankara Bhagavadpada is placed in the middle and His four sishyas, namely, Padmapadacharya, Sureswaracharya, Totakacharya and Hastamalakacharya are placed in the four directions.

Let the grace of Jagadgurus be on one and all.

గురు గీత

यत्सत्तया जगद्सत्वं यत्पकाशेन भायुतम् ।
नंदनं च यदानंदात् तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः ॥
by which existence the world appears; and by which light the world is bright; and by which bliss the world derives happiness; to that GURU I bow down.

मन्नाथ श्री जगन्नथो मद्गुरु स्त्रिजगद्गुरुः ।
ममाऽत्मा सर्वभूतात्मा तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः ॥
My lord is the lord of the universe (jagat); my guru is the guru of the three worlds; my atma is the atma of all the beings; I bow down to such lord = guru = self!

अखंड मंडलाकारं व्याप्तं येन चराचरम्
तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः
"akhanda mandalaakaaram" in which the whole of living and non-living beings appear, that word "tat" has been shown to me by the GURU. I bow down to such guru.

देहे जीवत्वमापन्नं चैतन्यं निष्कलं परम्
त्वं पदम् दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः
That which entered the body, that "jeeva chaitanyam" which is never tainted by anything, that word "tvam" has been shown to be by the GURU. I bow down to such guru.

अखंडं परमार्थं सत् ऐक्यं च त्वं तदोश्शुभम्
असिना दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः
akhandam, paramaardham that truth and body, this are one and the same that is shown by the word "asi". Such word is shown to me by the GURU. I bow down to the Guru.

Having said that, a small word of caution.
गुरवो बहवस्सन्ति शिष्य वित्तापहारकाः
दुर्लभ स्स गुरुर्लोके शिष्य संताप हारकः
guravah, bahavah, santi, sishya, vitta, apahaarakaaH.
durlabhaH, saH, guruH, loke, sishya, saMtaapa, haarakaH
There are lot of gurus who take away the wealth of the sishya; it is indeed difficult to get a guru who will take away the "worldly misery" of the sishya.

(Most famous "gururbrahma, gururvishnu gurudevo maheswarah, gurussakshaat parabrahma tasmai sri gurave namaha" is also from this chapter of Skanda Purana only.)

గురువు - శిష్యుడు

వేదవిదుడు, పాపరహితుడు, కామనారహితుడు, బ్రహ్మవిదులలో శ్రేష్ఠుడు, బ్రహ్మనిస్ఠుడు, ఇంధనం లేని అగ్ని లా శాంతుడు, అవ్యాజ కరుణా సముద్రుడు, శరణాగత సుజనులకు మిత్రుడు యైన వాడే నిజమైన గురువు.

మోక్షకామి, విధేయుడు, ప్రశాంతచిత్తుడు, శమదమాది గుణాన్వితుడై తనను శరణు వేడిన వానికి గురువు కేవలం అనుగ్రహమాత్రంచే తత్త్వోపదేశం చేస్తాడు.

అజ్ఞానాంధకారాన్ని నిర్మూలించి, సాక్షాత్కార కమలాన్ని వికసింపజేసే విష్ణుస్వరూపుడే గురుదేవుడు. ఆ గురు భాస్కరునిచే నా మనస్సనే ఆకాశం వెలుగు నొందినది.
