Having understood what is permanent and what is temporary, having realized the TRUTH, performing righteous deeds always, conduct yourself in a way that all ten directions praise O guvvala cenna! (59)

Having known that death is inevitable, not trying to cure it all the way, why do people cry post mortem? O guvvala cenna! (104)

To get the right direction to the path of non repetition of old age and death, one should pray to a realized sage for rightly recognizing such a path. O guvvala cenna! (105)

Having realized the ultimate truth, one should carryout the worldly transactions as if knowing nothing but not losing the focus from that ultimate ONE. O guvvala cenna! (106)

I became tranquil by enough of successes attained by visiting & convincing powerful kings (leaders / CEOs etc.,)  of this world.
I will attain permanent peace by treading the path of realization of the ultimate bliss (brahma-pada-rAja-dvAra-saukhambu) by thy grace O lord of SrI kAlahasti! I will surely get beyond all the anxieties and attain that peace. I am sure....

sarvadA sarvadA'smAkam sannidhim saMnidhim kriyAt

-- A prayer to Goddess SArada (seen in the beginning of 4th sarga of raghuvamSam of mahAkavi KAlidAsa)

O Goddess SAradA! (who is having) the face like fully bloomed lotus of Sarad Rtu! O sarva+dA (sarva=everything, da=capable of giving; so sarvada is the one who is capable of giving everything i.e., the goddess of knowledge) always in our speech (sarvadA asmAkam vadanAmbujE) reveal (cause - kriyAt) and point towards (sannidhim) hidden treasure of TRUE knowledge (sat+nidhim - true supreme knowledge).

vAgdEvi or SArada or saraswati reveals herself in the faculty of speech which is called vadana. Only due to right knowledge one can achieve anything. She is sarvada as well. She should finally bestow the supreme knowledge that confers moksha!

dArA imE mE, paSavaSca mE mE, dhanAni mE mE, ittham narO mEsha samAna kanThaH ahOhyayam kAla vRkENa nItaH

In Sanksrit, "mE" means "for me" or "mine". Usually man keeps bleating "this wife is mine and for me", "these animals are mine and more for me" and "this money is mine and need more for me" like a goat. Alas! as this bleating is going on, the kAla (time in the form of death which is not apparent) is taking away the man goat!

Kapila's teaching from pOtana bhAgavatam

-- on the occassion of Kapila shashTi, vyatIpAta, mahAlaya paksham

Kapila, the first philosopher describes the nature of human life and its ultimate purpose in Srimad bhAgavatam.

gRhamEdhi - being righteous, living a pious life leads to higher realms of life of progressively. But once the results of the meritorious actions depleate, one will come back to the earth for again performing actions.

dhIra mati - (one with a firm resolve) Only by giving up ahamkAra, mamakAra the wise men seek merger in the Lord. Only those follow the non-repetitive path leading to mOksha.

So, living a righteous life is a necessary condition for attaining moksha but that alone is not the sufficient condition confers moksha. Essentially one should seek moksha giving up Ego and attachment.

This is the esssence of teaching bhagavAn kapila taught to his mother dEvahUti.

http://nonenglishstuff.blogspot.in/2009/09/blog-post_14.html

The good qualities like peacefulness, forgiveness, straightforwardness, talking in pleasant manner are considered as incapability by those who do not have these qualities.

In this world, people generally respect those who are praising themselves, wicked, forcible, running hurriedly here and there, always uses power to "control by stick".

So, as needed, one should show his power to get things done in this world. Otherwise people think of a good person to be incapable.

సమ ప్రవృత్తి - equanimity of God

-- శ్రీ రావణ కృత శివ తాండవ స్తోత్రం నుంచి (వైశాఖ మాస శివరాత్రి సందర్భంగా )

Lord sadASiva is the lord of lords or mahAdEva. RAvaNa was a great devotee of Siva who has really described God in the form of Siva. { RAvaNa failed to adhere to righteousness or dharma and met his end in the hands of God in the form of Rama; that does not come in the way of his devotion to the God in the form of Siva; in all times rAma is not different from Siva }

in Siva tAnDava stotra rAvaNa describes the "equanimity" or "equal vision" of God towards all the subjects as follows:

दृषद्-विचित्र तल्पयोः dRshd-vicitra talpayOH = in hard stone floor as a bed and beautifully made bed or seat (talpa could mean a bed or a couch something like sofa)
भुजंग मौक्तिक स्रजोः bhujanga-mauktika srajOH = in the garland of snake and a beautiful garland made up of best pearls
गरिष्ठरत्न लोष्ठयोः garishTha ratna-lOshThayOH = in the great gem stone like a diamond and a lump of dried clay
सुहृत्-विपक्ष पक्षयोः suhRd-vipaksha pakshayOH = in the friendly side and the enemy side
तृण-अरविन्द चक्षुषोः tRNa-aravinda cakshushOH = in the blade of grass (considered lowest of living beings) and in the god of creation (considered as highest of living beings)
प्रजा-महीमहेन्द्रयोः prajA-mahImahEndrayOH = in ordinary person and an emperor of emperors
सम प्रवृत्तिकः कदा सदाशिवं भजाम्यहम् sama-pravRttikaH kadA sadASivaM bhajAmi aham = When will I adore such Lord sadASiva who always sees equally among all beings!

Let the grace of such equanimous vision of LORD be on one and ALL!

amara, asura kara vipari

SamiyiMpaga cAladayya jagatInAthA!

amara (divine) asura (daemonic) hands churning using the mandhara mountain having supported by the 'back' of great kUrma Tortoise (kamaTham) was not even able to  alleviate the itch of the back of the Lord.

Essential meaning: The great task of churning the milky ocean (milky-way) to produce wealth by divine and daemonic forces using the biggest mountain as  churning rod, longest serpent as the churning rope, with LORD in the form of tortoise as basis to support their effort and make it fruitful, which produced all acceptable wealth (Goddess Lakshmi), health (Lord Dhanvantari), kAmadhEnu, kalpa vRksha etc., etc., was not even capable of scratching HIS back.

Even the greatest effort known to us is so insignificant and useless when comes in comparison with the Lord!

My notes:  (rather a rough translation in to English)
I am not the body, not senses, not the ego, not the mind, not intellect, nor their effects internal or external. I am the eternal witness distinct from all these.

I am the witness of speech, witness of vital forces, witness of intellect, witness of intellectual activity, witness of mind, witness of mental activity, witness of all senses. Witness I am, distinct from all of them always.

I am not gross, not subtle, not long; I am not a child, not youth nor old; I am not blind, not dumb, nor impotent. Always been a distinct witness I am.

I am not the one who is not moving, nor the one who is moving, nor the one who is killing; I am not the doer, not the enjoyer,  nor the speaker. I am not the happier one nor the miserable one. I am always been the witness distinct from all these.

I am not yOgi, not detached, nor attached; I am not angry, not desirous, nor possessive. I am neither bound, nor striving for release, nor unbound. I am the witness ever distinct and independent.

I am not the internal illumination (of dream), nor the external illumination (of waking), not illumination nor darkness (of deep sleep); I am not the listener, not the thinker, nor the knower/understander. Ever distinct observer I am always.

In me body, senses, intellect or yoga do not exist; In me there are no traces of virtue, nor even the vice; I am far away from the hunger, thirst etc., always been free unattached consciousness I am.

I have no limbs like hands and legs, I have no faculty like speech nor vision; I have no vital force, no mind, no intellect. I am ever fulfilled like space and ever untouched by any of these! I am ever existent form of consciousness alone!

That is what I am - my true Identity. Let the grace of BhagavadpAda be on one and all...

tAraka mantramu kOrina dorikenu
dhanyuDanaitini OrannA

tArakam means 'that which helps you cross over' the difficult samsAra. mantram means 'helps crossing over by the means of thought' So, tAraka mantram is one which helps to cross over this repetitive samsAra by simply thinking about it. Such a formula can only be given by someone who has successfully used and experienced the result of the formula by himself. A Guru can provide such a tAraka mantramu to a deserving sishya. Having got such a mantram one becomes accomplished - dhanya.

mI~rina kAluni dUtalapAliTi
mRtyuve yadi nammara yannA

It is the death for the yama dUtas (kAluni dUtalu). The tArakamantram is the death for yama dutas. Have faith in this!

enni janmamula nenci cUcinanu
EkO nArAyaNuDannA
anni rUpulai unna parAtmuni
nA mahAtmuni kathalanu vinna

The ultimate Atma (paramAtma) appears in various forms e.g., mathya, kUrma... kRShna, rAma... but in the essence he is the only ONE. Listening to those narrations of lord nArAyaNa in various forms leads to the fruition of tArakam.

enni janmamula jEsina pApamu
lI janmamutO viDunannA
anniTiki kaDasAri janmamidi
satyam bika puTTuTa sunnA

The pApamulu i.e., sins carried out by me over several past lives are going to be detached / removed from me in this life (due to the power of the tAraka mantramu!) This is the very last life and I am absolutely sure not to take another birth! (or the probability of me taking another form is ZERO)

dharmamu tappaka bhadrAdrISuni
tanamadilO nammucununna
marmamu delisina rAmadAsuni hR
nmandiramuna nE yunna

Not falling off from the path of righteousness and being faithful to the Lord of bhadrAdri from deep of heart; also who knows the secret (marmamu) that the lord resides in the heart-temple of SrI rAmadAsu (the servant of rAma) - declares that "I have got the tAraka mantram as desired and I have become accomplished by it."

-- On the occasion of rAma Navami this Friday 19th April.

Let there be grace of Lord rAma on one and all and let everyone who desires the tAraka mantram; HE lets them have it.

Ultimate Protection

This one act alone proves your nature of "paramOpakAri" (i.e., ultimate helping nature / protection of Lord.) of paSupati. (All the beings are bound by a sense of "mine" to the sense of "I"; this bondage is called as 'pASa'. One who is the lord of all bonded beings is the paSupati - None other than Siva!)

Having seen the animate and inanimate worlds both inside and out, to protect them, you have kept the most dangerous hAlAhala (When gods and daemons churned the milky way the first produced was the anti-matter called halahala which was nullifying everything. All those gods ran fast to mahAdEva for protection) in your throat by not swallowing it and neither spitting it out! Hence you have got a black spot on the throat of your white body! (Even such a spot is a great mark of Lord's protection to these worlds inside and out)

Tomorrow, mahA SivarAtri is the favorite day of Lord Siva. Let One and All recognize the Lord's protection and receive the grace!

A verse from dASarathI satakam of bhakta rAmadAsu that reinforces the same bhava as my past post - http://nonenglishstuff.blogspot.in/2012/04/blog-post_16.html made exactly 10 months back.

Uha (proper understanding), apOha (misunderstanding) are the capabilities of mind. While these capabilities of mind are strong, before the diseases take over the body and while body is still strong to take up the austereties, MAN should take up the sAdhana i.e., practice to attain mOksha (ultimate realization). Not performing tattva vicAra (self enquiry) is counter productive of having body (+ mind + intellect)

You should always protect the TRUTH as TRUTH alone is the highest power. You should be self-controlled, and be devoid of cruelty. Always protect Vedas, follow the dharma and always engage yourself in the tapas (of following swadharma)

O King! you should always revere brahmaNas, especially the wise-menAcAryas (those who teach by practicing) and Ritvijas (those who make you perform your duties as per the sAstra) and seek their guidance.

--- Nahusha to yudhishThira in mahAbhArata, vanaparvam, 181 adhyAyam 30 SlOkam.

However virtuous, How brave one is, prosperity (or growth i.e., vRddhi) deludes a person.
One who is going through the phase of happiness and enjoyments will be deluded is my (Nahusha's) opinion.

Background: Nahusha was a virtuous king. Due to some unforeseen circumstances King of Gods (Indra) went into exile. All the gods selected Nahusha as the Indra due to his virtuous nature. Nahusha became Indara and started ruling the kingdom of Gods. In due course, Nahusha's growth deluded his senses and he desired SacIdEvi, Queen of Indra also to be his wife.

Queen SacI went to Lord Brahma and requested for a upAya (technique / solution) to the problem. Brahma told her to ask Nahusha to come to her on a palanquin carried by the Rishis (realized sages). As the palanquin is being carried, Sage AgasThya was walking slow. Being deluded by desire, Nahusha kicked maharshi Agasthya saysing "Sarpa, Sarpa" (meas go fast, go fast)

Sage Agasthya thought Nahusha is not suitable anymore for the kingdom of Gods and cursed him to be a sarpa (a serpent that crawls). Hence Nahusha become a python and living on the Earth. As Nahusha requested for release from the curse to Sage, Agasthya told him "you will be released when dharmarAja, yudhisThira rightly answers your questions in dvApara yuga.

So, when BhIma is captured by Nahusha in python form, King Dharmaraja came to rescue BhIma. During the process of Nahusha - yudhishThira samvAda (discussion between Nahusha and YudhishThira) this verse appears.

--- Today is an auspicious day of Pushya amAvasya (new moon day) with AdivAra (sunday) during the mahA kumbha mEla time.

Remembering Sage AgashThya, Nahusha and YudhisThira today and chanting Aditya hRdaya stotram, giving arghya to pitRdevas (manes) are highly meritorious activities for today. And they keep us grow without delusion.

Just like a parent tortoise, a Guru can take care of his disciples just by thinking about them. My Guru protects me just in this way which makes me remember this verse.

on Intutive Knowledge by Swami Vivekananda

Today, 12th January 2013 is the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. He has influenced several people and I am one among them. (See my past post on his influence on me- http://nonenglishstuff.blogspot.in/2011/11/blog-post_21.html )

Would like to put up a simple thought of Swami from "Swami Vivekananda an Intuitive Scientist" - http://www.chennaimath.org/istore/product/swami-vivekananda-an-intuitive-scientist/

-- saundarya laharI (51 slOka) of Adi SankarAcArya

The expression towards Siva is sRingAra, others (who feel they are 'Men' in front of you) kutsana i.e., disgust or bhIbhatsa. towards Ganga it is rOsha i.e., raudra. Listening to the narrations of giriSa i.e, Siva the expression is vismaya i.e, adbhuta or wonderment. Thy eyes show the expression of fear i.e, bhIta or bhayAnaka rasa towards the 'ahi' the snakes that adore Lord Siva. The red tinge like the red-lotus in the eyes signify the vIra rasa that generates the saubhAgya. Towards thy sakhIs i.e, friends, hasya rasa is expressed. Towards me (the devotee) thy expression is always karUnA i.e. compassion.

Out of nava rasas, eight are covered above and "sAnta rasa" is not. Why? divine mother's nature is pure sAta which is the basis of all the rest of rasas.

Jada Bharata's Teaching

Srimad Bhagavatam is a PurANa. The primary difference between modern history and purANa:

The modern history can only tell Mr X was born on so and so date, he has conquered so and so country, he acted such and such way and he died on so and so date. That's it.

Where as an ItihAsa (iti + hA + asau means "this is how it happened!") of a purANa explains why Mr. X was born as Mr.X, What happened during & after Mr.X's lifespan and what is the conclusion to be derived from the incident of Mr.X's narration. So, the reader can immediately benefited by learning from Mr. X's mistakes and start following the righteous path (i.e., dharma)

There is absolutely no compulsion to study purANas and ItihAsAs if one is not interested in knowing true and useful history of mankind.

Narration of Jada Bharata:

Bharata (This country is called as bhArata varsha due to him being the emperor of this land!) was the son of Rishabdeva. He righteously ruled this land for a long time and while he was still healthy and capable, retired to forests giving up all the worldly attachments.

Towards end of his life sitting at the bank of river Gandaki he saw a small baby deer floating in the water. He rescued it and started looking after the deer. He has developed attachment to the deer and in the final stage of his life thinking of the deer he died.

Due to the attachment to the deer while dying, he was born as a deer in the next life. Due to his penance in past life, he remembered his past life of King Bharata and lived the life of deer with devotion to Lord Hari near a temple and in the due course he left the deer's body.

As the next birth, he was born in a Brahmin family to pious Brahmana posessing sama, dama, tapas and tyaga. But he remembered his life as a deer as well as the King Bharata and started being indifferent to the worldly pleasures. There by he was called as JaDa. (non responsive) He was called as adhama brAhmaNa and jaDa bharata by fellow citizens.

King RahoogaNa going to meet sage kapila needed ONE bearer of his palanquin. He has seen jaDa bharata on the path and employed as the bearer. As jaDa bharata missed the steps and gone out of sync with other bearers thereby causing discomfort to the King RahoogaNa. Having repeatedly scolded by the King, Sage jaDa bharata makes a statement:

"You are talking of path, porter and punishment (to me), but none of these exist for me. If there is load, it is for the one who carries it; path is for the walker. Fat, thin, sickness, hunger, pain, fear, quarrel, desire, young, old, sleep, love, hate, anger, pretty and ugly are all present in a person who is body-conscious, they are not in me. All that you say apply only to the body, not to the Atma. 'I am king, you are servant,' such feelings are only in the practical world, not in Adhytma (spiritual world.) If you think you should punish me, you may punish, or beat the body; it will not affect me. I live in my own world, unconcerned about the body. Your punishment will be like grinding powdered stone or like beating a lifeless stone."

With these words, King RahoogaNa realized that the person carrying his palanquin was a great sage and comes down and falls at the feet of jaDa bharata.

There is a wonderful discussion that follows between the King and jaDa bharata leading to the discourse of ultimate truth.

So, this brief is shared here for the readers to study the bharata akhyAna from Fifth Canto of Srimad Bhagavata PurANa.
